When Your Clothes Stop Fitting, Perhaps Your Body Isn’t the Problem
Our bodies change throughout our lives. Weight fluctuates, proportions shift, and the way we feel about our bodies can change too.
That’s not particularly unusual. What is unusual, perhaps, is the expectation that our clothes should continue to fit and flatter us in exactly the same way for years on end.
We don’t expect our hair, our skincare, our shoes or even our lifestyle to stay exactly the same as we get older. Yet we can somehow expect the wardrobe we built five or ten years ago to keep working without any adjustment.
And when it doesn't, we often blame ourselves.
And perhaps, quietly in the back of your mind, there’s the thought that you might fit into it again one day.
I completely understand that. Clothes carry memories. They can remind us of a particular time in our lives, a particular version of ourselves or simply a time when we felt really good.
But if most of your wardrobe is quietly waiting for you to become someone you used to be, it’s not going to make getting dressed any easier today.
your wardrobe isn’t the problem. Your decision making is.
You're standing in front of a full wardrobe, running ten minutes late, and somehow there's still nothing to wear. Not because the rail is empty. If anything it's the opposite, packed with options that all, for one reason or another, don't quite feel right this morning. So your hand goes where it always goes, to the same jacket you wore last Tuesday, and the Tuesday before that. Not because you love it. Because it's the one thing you're still sure still works.
The Wardrobe Basics Myth - What you really need for a Functional, Professional wardrobe
You open the doors. You scan the rails. You sigh.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Most busy professional men and women don’t lack clothes - they lack clarity. They have pieces that almost work, outfits that worked once, and a few impulse buys that never quite earned their place. What they don’t have is a dependable system, which means the right basics.
I’m going to redefine what wardrobe basics really mean, and how to choose them with the least amount of stress, thought and time.
